Clarity and Hope

These days, botanical photography has become my escape hatch—a brief respite from the toxic miasma that’s seeping into every nook and cranny of our lives.
I’m fortunate in many ways, and living near the wonderful greenhouse at Pemberton Farms in Cambridge, Massachusetts is another item on my gratitude list (the Pemberton grocery store, our go-to shop for most of our food, is another). The greenhouse has provided me with an array of subjects for my photo art and passion.
When I compose and process these botanical images, I’m generally guided by my sense of aesthetics and my emotional/visceral response to them. This photo of Cyclamen speaks to me on a metaphorical level as well…a regression from clarity and hope to ambiguity and despair. I’m a realist, but I still hang onto clarity and hope.

Steve Bennett is a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based visual artist. He began taking photographs more than 40 years ago, in the age of film, and transitioned to digital photography in the late 90s. Today, in addition to taking and making traditional street, macro, and landscape photographs, he creates photo-based abstract composites designed to take viewers on fanciful flights of the imagination through virtual realms.
